Shattered Lives - Ladder Exchange Initiative 2009 is coming soon

This year the Ladder Exchange Initiative will run from 1 September until 31 December 2009.

What is the Ladder Exchange Initiative?

The Ladder Exchange Initiative is simple; if you have a ladder which is bent, broken or battered you can part exchange it for a new one at any one of HSE partner outlets who are offering discounts on the sales of all ladders at very competitive rates. It also provides dutyholders with an opportunity to review pre-use checks, training, supervision and other arrangements for ladder work.

High heels 'should be banned from the workplace'

Stiletto heels could be banned from the workplace because of health and safety reasons, according to union bosses.

The motion said: "High heels may look glamorous on the Hollywood catwalks but are completely inappropriate for the day-today working environment."

The Trade Union Congress, predominantly male, has proposed a motion arguing that high heels are demeaning to women while they also contribute to long term injuries.

They propose instead that women wear "sensible shoes" with an inch heel limit in an attempt to avoid future foot and back pain as well as injuries. The motion is due to be debated at next month's conference.

Safety of pandemic vaccines

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 briefing note 6 – World Health Organisation

WHO is aware of some media reports that have expressed concern about the safety of vaccines for pandemic influenza. The public needs to be reassured that regulatory procedures in place for the licensing of pandemic vaccines, including procedures for expediting regulatory approval, are rigorous and do not compromise safety or quality controls.

Vaccines are among the most important medical interventions for reducing illness and deaths during a pandemic. However, to have the greatest impact, pandemic vaccines need to be available quickly and in large quantities.

During the 1957 and 1968 pandemics, vaccines arrived too late to be used as an effective mitigation tool during the more severe phases of the pandemics.

International Youth Day: Health and safety aspects of working life – 12th August

Young people are especially vulnerable in the workplace.

Across Europe, 18 to 24-year-olds are at least 50% more likely to be hurt at work than older people. Young people are also more likely to suffer from an occupational illness.

Behind the statistics are individual stories. Young people having to live with the consequences of accidents and illness. Young people dying who had their whole lives ahead of them.

There are many reasons why young workers are at risk.  But they are all things that we can do something about. Employers, educators, health and safety professionals, policy makers, and young workers themselves - we all have a responsibility to help keep young people safe and healthy.

How do I keep safe? Advice for young workers

What do I have to do? Advice for employers
