HSE Inspection Drive to Target Construction Contractors

Philip White, HSE’s Chief Inspector of Construction, has said on record that the lives of many workers are at risk on construction sites because of the negligence of its contractors who do not follow the health and safety rules stipulated by the government. According to him, most of the accidents that occur at such construction sites can be avoided only if its management takes some care.

Construction sites all over Britain are considered as one of the most dangerous to work in where safety rules are flouted regularly. This claim of the HSE has been substantiated by data which shows that fifty deaths have occurred and 11,264 were injured while working at various construction sites across the country during 2008-09.

International women's day: Gender issues in safety and health at work

Women make up 42% of the employed population in the EU. Men and women are not the same and the jobs they do, their working conditions and how they are treated by society are not the same. These factors can affect the hazards they face at work and the approach that needs to be taken to assess and control them.

Factors to take into account include:

  • women and men are concentrated in certain jobs, and therefore face hazards particular to those jobs

  • women and men are physically different, including in regard to reproduction

  • women and men have different responsibilities in the home. Working women may have two jobs, at work and in the home.

It is therefore important to recognise these differences and take a 'gender sensitive' approach to health and safety at work.
