Slips, trips & falls cost the UK around £800M per year |
|

Slip, trip and fall incidents in the workplace
cost 40 workers their lives last year and cost
society an estimated £800 million each year, the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) warned on the
February 1st as it launched a hard-hitting campaign.
HSE figures show that slips and trips are the
most common cause of major workplace injury in
Britain. More workplace deaths are triggered by
falls from height than any other cause,
according to official statistics.
In addition to 40 fatalities, there were over
15,000 major injuries to workers, as well as
over 30,000 workers having to take over three
days off work.
As well as the tragic human cost, preventable
slips, trips and falls are having a serious
financial impact on the UK. HSE estimates that
the combined financial costs incurred by society
as a whole is around £800million a year, at a
time when both businesses and individuals are
struggling financially during the current
recession.

Workers to get time to train
|
|
The government plans to introduce
legislation to allow workers to request time off for
training from April.
By Sara White
Qualifying employees will be able to request time
off to train or study under the new law from 6 April
2010.
To qualify for the right known as "time to train",
workers will have to work for a company of 250 or
more employees.
This legal right will be extended to employees
working in organisations of all sizes, regardless of
the amount of employees they have.
To qualify for the training benefit, staff must have
worked for their employer for at least 26 weeks.

EEF survey shows health & safety moving up boardroom agenda |
|

Manufacturers are urging government to
resist pressure for new legal duties on
directors after a major new survey concluded
that, despite the recession, company boards
are taking a more hands-on approach and
spending more time on health and safety.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Board
is under pressure to recommend a new duty on
directors at their meeting later this month.
However the survey of nearly 400 companies,
conducted by EEF the manufacturers’
organisation, revealed there has been a
major increase in board engagement in
managing health and safety risks over the
last three years. According to EEF their
survey proves the proposed new laws are
unnecessary and maybe counter productive.
